Homelessness to Opportunity

The H2O Project

The Salvation Army have been working with people on the streets from its earliest beginnings in 1865. Today in Southampton the underlying causes of homelessness might have changed, but the needs of individuals are still just as great.

Belief in action

In February 2002 a new facility was opened in Oxford Street, Southampton City Centre to offer refreshment and information. Recently, it has been re-located, andrelaunched as the H2O project, with particular focus on matching the help offered to the particular needs of individuals.

The symbolism of water as a source of life and new growth reflects The Salvation Army’s ethic of belief in action; the wider aims of this project being to help people move from Homelessness to Opportunities which are currently beyond their reach.

Southampton Shirley Corps supports the H2O project financially with fundraising to meet the running costs.

The Daily Echo gave worthy coverage, including a good-sized photograph, when it featured the official opening of the H2O Project following their relocation from Oxford Street to Princes Street, Northam.

Special guests included the Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Edwina Cooke and Divisional Headquarters Officers.
