History
The band was formed in 1908 when it was known as the Freemantle Band.
In 1929 The Salvation Army moved from Freemantle to Wesleylan Chapel in Church Street and became known as the Shirley Corps.
In 1969 there was an extensive redevelopment of the Church Street area and the Salvation Army moved to a new suite of buildings in Victor Street.
Over the years the band has maintained an un-broken record of service, taking part in many evangelical campaigns and engagements, locally and in towns and cities thoughtout the British Isles.
During the 1960s the band appeared on television and often was heard on local radio broadcasts.
The Band Today
The ministry of the band extends to people in all walks of life and includes monthly visits to the Southampton General Hospital, as well as frequency outreach visits to local Elderly Peoples Homes. The band also takes part in the weekly Sunday Worship meetings.
