On behalf of Major Ruth Hill
Hi Tina,
It's good to hear that you have been thinking of the Residents of the Towers. Most of them are now at back in their flats and getting on with their day-to-day life as best they can. There is a greatly increased sense of community within Shirley Towers, so even in the wake of the events of last month we can perhaps see something positive coming out of this.
The big challenge now is fighting the secondary effects of the fire. A lot of the families have lost a lot - from furniture to food that was in the fridge - due to smoke or water damage. There is a group of people at the Salvation Army who would like to raise money in practical support of those families who are suffering, but we are still in the planning phases and nothing has been finalised. If we could raise £50,000 and split it among the 40 families, it really would make a world of difference.
Then of course you have the psychological effects of such a disaster, such as Post-Traumatic Stress, which may last months in some cases. The Salvation Army is working closely with Social Services and others to provide as much support as we can to those in need. Along with the Council, we have set up a weekly drop-in each Wednesday for residents of the Towers and anyone else involved, to come along, have a coffee, and chat, and aim to provide a listening ear and practical support where possible. If you would like to come along, or know anyone else involved who would like to, you would of course be very much welcome. The drop-in runs from 10-12 each Wednesday at the Corps in Victor Street.
Regards,
Ruth
